Accompanying Conditions
If your child is younger than 3 years old, he/she is eligible for the "early intervention" program in your state. This federally-funded program is available in every US state, but may be provided by different agencies. To find information for your state visit NICHY.
Early intervention provides special services for eligible infants and toddlers and their families. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, a complete evaluation of the child is necessary to decide whether he or she is eligible for early intervention services. These services should identify and meet children’s needs in five developmental areas: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal mandate that guarantees students with disabilities a free, appropriate public education. The education plan for a student with disabilities is called an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and can include "related services" such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, a one-on-one aide, etc as well as accommodations such as preferential seating, a behavioral plan, and other such strategies to enable education. To help determine what related services and accommodations should be included in the IEP, the school must conduct a comprehensive needs assessment.
