    Scottish Rites

"...Scottish Rite clinics provide diagnostic evaluation and treatment of speech and language disorders, as well as learning disabilities... There are 113 Scottish Rite clinics, centers, and special programs for children and therapists located throughout the U.S. Each facility is staffed by speech-language pathologists or other trained personnel.

"...As a rule, the Scottish Rite Clinics for Childhood Language Disorders accept preschool children who have difficulty speaking or understanding the spoken word or school-age children who have difficulty learning to read. Some centers also offer literacy training for adults. Inquiries on age groups and program offerings in specific areas should be addressed to the director of the local Scottish Rite facility. Equally important, all services are available regardless of race, creed, or the family's inability to pay."

    United Way

"Information and referral (I&R) services link people in need with the community services designated to meet those needs. Local United Way organizations operate or support more than 500 I&R services in communities nationwide. Trained specialists at each of the I&R services are responsible for coordinating many diverse but integrated activities. These include:

Assisting callers in need by referring them to agencies that provide help with housing/rent, utility payments, food, clothing, medical services, rehabilitation, elder care, counseling and a range of individual and family needs.

Developing and maintaining a database of all available community services.

Collecting and reporting data on client needs that can be used in planning and prioritizing the use of community resources.

Acting as advocates, when necessary, for those who are unable to represent themselves.

Providing training to other agencies and organizations."
