Dyslexia: give more emphasis to spelling and writing.September 4, 2002, "Middlesex University’s Professor Diane Montgomery believes that dyslexic children have been affected by too much emphasis being given to teaching reading and not enough to spelling and handwriting skills. 'Research shows that remedial attention to reading transfers very little to spelling whereas remedial attention to spelling does transfer to reading,' says Professor Montgomery, who is the author and programme leader of two distance learning programmes for Middlesex University".

Help! My Child Can’t Spell by Kathryn Stout July/August 1998 . "Spelling is a regular part of the language arts curriculum through eighth grade. So why don’t all children learn to spell? Most learn to memorize the words long enough to pass a weekly test. It’s the fact that many of those same students don’t retain correct spellings long enough to use them in daily written work that causes one to question the worth of those high scores. Fortunately, there are strategies that will help students hang on to those correct spellings."

Study tips spell success for frustrated students by Dr. Yvonne Fournier Parent's Post Wire Service. "I help my son with his weekly spelling lists. He studies the words, then I call them out to him until he can tell me the correct spelling. The problem is that even when he spells them back to me correctly, he usually ends up missing several on the test the next day. Could this be a memory problem?"
